SURVEY OF THE TOP 40 TEXTBOOKS - Spreadsheet Modeling vs. Spreadsheet Templates 

Spreadsheet Modeling is defined as teaching students how to build financial models in a spreadsheet (such as Excel). It is an active learning approach. By contrast, Spreadsheet Templates are defined as providing already-built spreadsheets to students. It is a passive learning approach. This survey examines the extent to which these two approaches are either built-in or available independently for the top 40 investments and corporate finance textbooks. 

Overall Results of the Survey:
    ·         Spreadsheet modeling is either be built-in or available independently for 29 of the top 40 textbooks. 
     ·         These textbooks represent more than 90% of the market share of investments and corporate textbooks.
    ·         This is an increase from 0 out of 40 textbooks with spreadsheet modeling in Fall 1998. Specifically,
           ·         14 textbooks have available a $15* supplement (a Spreadsheet Modeling book / CD).
           ·         12 textbooks bundle a $5* supplement (a Spreadsheet Modeling book / CD).
           ·         4 textbooks integrate spreadsheet modeling boxes into the primary textbook and have available a $15*
                  supplement (a Spreadsheet Modeling book / CD).
    ·         By contrast, Spreadsheet Templates are bundled with 21 of the top 40 textbooks.
